Top Household Items You Should Avoid

Today, there are lots of household products that make our lives easier. However, some of these products can cause serious problems if they aren’t used properly. Let’s get right into it.

Recalled products

Always be on the lookout for products that have been recalled because of the dangers they pose. Manufacturers often recall products if they have been found to be defective. This is necessary to prevent injury to more people.

Where a manufacturer refuses to recall a product, an affected person can contact a Chicago product liability law firm to get compensation for their injury.

Toilet cleaners

While you generally cannot avoid toilet cleaners, you must avoid mixing different products together. These chemicals are composed of different elements and could cause serious problems if mixed. No matter how little, avoid mixing cleaners.

Also, as an added tip, use gloves and face masks while handling cleaning products.

Air fresheners

Everyone loves a fresh scent at home and air fresheners are a cheap solution. But there’s a catch, these chemicals can cause health problems later on as they accumulate in your body. For one, they have a negative effect on people with lung disease and can affect hormones which will in turn make it more difficult to conceive.

Top Household Items You Should Avoid part 2

Besides general health, air fresheners can be bad for pets such as cats and dogs. They are also not recommended in homes with developing children.

Lead paint

Advancements in technology have helped us see the disadvantages of lead paint and it has not been in use since. However, those who move into older houses may be at risk of lead poisoning. If you’re not sure when the house was built, then it’s safe to call a professional to repaint it.

Do not try to repaint it yourself, because you may unknowingly ingest some of the particles in the process.

Button batteries

Button batteries are dangerous, especially in homes with little children. If the kids swallow the batteries, they can burn into the stomach within a few hours and even lead to death.

This is why they aren’t recommended for toys for small children because the children can swallow the batteries easily. Besides button batteries, other batteries such as lithium batteries can also cause a fire. In a recent case, a dog started a house fire by chewing on lithium batteries.

Extension cords

These seemingly harmless products can start home fires. The cords often overheat when some high-power appliances are used on them. And some overheat on their own regardless of prior usage. There’s no way to tell when it will develop issues.

Try as much as possible to avoid using it. If it is not possible, then disconnect and turn off the extension when you’re not using it. This simple act can save your life.

Keeping your home safe is a priority, especially if you have little ones. So try to avoid these items as much as possible. If you get injured regardless, you can speak to an attorney to learn about what claims are available to you.
